Tales & Achievements

I am humbled by the achievements of many radio hams. Anything I were to write here for myself would be insignificant compared to the amazing things others have managed to achieve.

Nevertheless, over the years I've reeled in some great DX and tried my hand at portable, mobile, satellite, data & gateway operation. I'm onto my forth paper log book & have driven over 150,000 miles with a radio at my side. And of course I've had some great QSOs & made some good friends along the way.

Here's a list of some of my radio highlights as I remember them:-

    • Contacts into the North Cook Islands & Vladivostock.
    • Contact into French Polynesia - I was doing something else in the shack when I heard the station make his first call. Got in just before the pileup!
    • Lincoln to Aberdeen on a 2m-dipole.
    • My first contacts with MM6ANA & MM6ZMD.
    • Numerous trips up Tinto Hill & Coulter Fell humfing a rucksack full of radio equipment & batteries. Best DX - LY2 on 2m tropo.
    • Operating the radio from many of the Munros in Scotland.
    • DXpeditions to the Isle of Muck, Canna & Rum.
    • Climbing up Ben Lawers in the mist, thinking I was at the top, speaking to a lad in Barrhead usine a CB portable radio, & then hearing a lad call me on the radio from the real top of the hill - I was on Beinn Ghlas (with 45' of climbing still to do!!).
    • All my EME contacts, but especially my 1st received station & my 1st 23cm/70cm QSOs.

A very modest list I know...

A toast to all our achievements!

And may we inspire each other to achieve even greater things...
